review by Ysanne Spevack
This is a cookery book written by two women who eat organic food from their local box scheme. The idea for this book was to give simple every day recipes for the fresh produce that box scheme users get in every season. As such, it’s a very practical book, with descriptions of seasonal fruit, veg and farming news by month. There’s also lots of information about box schemes and the CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture scheme. This is a rural scheme whereby consumers commit to support a particular local farm, either with money or time, or both. In return, they can pick up a weekly box
of fresh, seasonal produce.
Most of the recipes in the book are wholesome vegetarian dinners and savoury side dishes based around seasonal vegetables. Favourites include Purple Sprouting Broccoli, Potato and Cheese Soup, Courgette Curry Pancakes, and Brussels Sprouts and Chestnuts with Maple Glaze. There are also some nice puddings like Elderberry Pie and Carrot Christmas Pudding, plus some drinks, jams and spreads like Raspberry Vodka, Pumpkin Jam and Courgette Pate.
It’s a very hands-on rustic book, reminiscent of The Good Life idea of food. Simply put, here’s what you can do with the fresh produce you get when you join a box scheme. If you’ve ever wondered what to do with an unnamed vegetable that’s appeared in your weekly box, this book’s for you.
