Grapefruit Seed Extract
- ANTI-BACTERIAL ACTIVITY - Grapefruit seed extract (GSE) demonstrates broad anti-bacterial effects against a variety of pathogens including Streptococcus spp, Staphylococcus Aureus, Enterococcus spp. An in vitro study of the effectiveness of GSE against 194 bacterial and 93 fungal strains observed that at 0.5% concentration, the growth of all microorganisms except for Klebsiella and Pseudomonas was inhibited, which were inhibited at higher concentration (1-2%).
- ANTI-FUNGAL ACTIVITY - Grapefruit seed extract is effective at inhibiting a range of fungal strains including: Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus oryzae, Penicillium citrinum, Penicillium spp, Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium spp, Pullularia pullulans, Trichophyton interdigital, Candida albicans, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Zygosaccharomyces rouxii and Hansenula anomala.
- DIGESTIVE SUPPORT - Grapefruit seed extract is suitable for reducing pathological organisms in the gastrointestinal tract, especially Candida, Geotrichum and haemolytic E.coli. It is beneficial in the treatment for conditions in which abnormal bowel flora may play a role, including IBS and autoimmune diseases such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease and ankylosing spondylitis; mouthwash to treat oral bacteria and to reduce plaque and tooth decay. GSE is a suitable aid for prevention of traveller's diarrhoea and for natural water decontaminant (caution advised as it does not inactivate viruses).
- ECZEMA - Studies in atopic eczema patients revealed increased levels of pathogenic bacteria including staphylococci and candida in the duodenum and colon. Intermittent diarrhoea, constipation, flatulence, bloating and abdominal discomfort were also noted in the majority of cases. Administration of GSE showed significant activity reducing counts of pathogens and produced definite improvements in gastrointestinal symptoms. No side effects were noted.
