What is organic?
Hi, I have been swaying towards going organic over the last couple of months. Normally I do all my food shopping at the local Tesco supermarket. There are (small) organic sections for fruit, veg, meat and some dried and tinned goods. The question I have relates to the what the classification of 'Organic' actually means. Some of the produce has a number attached as well. Are there levels of organisity (if that is a word)? I remember a couple of years ago hearing about the reclassification of eggs into barn, free range and so on only to discover that some free range farms had conditions that where nearly as bad as the battery hens.
Could you help clear this up for me?
Thanks,
John Delaney
Hi John,
In answer to your question, the different numbers refer to different certification bodies. For example, the Soil Association is UK5 in code. All food products sold as organic in the UK have to adhere to strict legally-binding minimum guidelines. Some certification bodies choose to go over and above these minimum guidelines. But all organic food is organic.
Hope this clarifies it for you,
Ysanne
