Soil Association charges
I have recently gone back to using organic produce (not from supermarkets - locally grown only) and have found at least three small meat producers who are hindered by the Soil Associations extortionate annual charges, meaning they are not aloud to use the word organic to describe there produce. I still buy from them as this doesn't bother me in the least bit, but how is this way of living supposed to expand if it is beong hindered internally?

There are many certification bodies in the UK that a small organic meat producer can be affiliated to. The most recognised of these is the Soil Association, a charity that has a limited company purely for certification. The Soil Association standards for organic are higher than the legal requirements of UKROFS, and as such demand more frequent inspection of their members. As such, being Soil Association certified costs more than being certified by most other bodies. However, a small organic meat producer might find that they can afford certification from another UKROFS registered board, such as the Organic Farmers and Growers.
