Mixed salad leaves
We are organic growers, certified by the Soil Association. This coming summer we intend to sell bags of mixed unwashed organic salad leaves which have the same presentation as those found in large supermarkets. We would be very interested to know what you & your readers think of pre-packed mixed salads - are they sought after or would you prefer to buy whole lettuce & bunches of herbs & prepare salads yourselves?

The Herbary
Hi Karen,
I support your hunch that you will sell more salad by offering a mixed leaf bag than individual whole lettuces. I can't speak for the readers, by I know that I certainly enjoy a good quality organic salad leaf mix. The secret to success is to make sure it really is a special mixed salad. Make sure you include unusual leaves like rocket and mizuna, and delicious herbs like coriander, tarragon or dill.
A top tip from me is for you to make a big deal on the side of your bags of leaves about not packing them in 'protective atmospheres' or using chlorine rinses. Let your customers know all the great reasons why organic mixed salad leaves are so much better than non-organic ones in terms of taste, presentation and health.
Let me know when they're ready...
Best wishes
Ysanne
