Organic food and MSG
Hi there,
I read a comment on this website that says it is illegal to use MSG in any organic products. Having had a severe allergic reaction to MSG I now need to avoid this additive. It is very difficult as it is disguised in many ways in foods including under yeast extract, hydrolyzed protein, natural flavour, seasoning etc, etc. I have some organic stock cubes at home that say they have yeast extract in, could there be MSG in them or not? Can MSG be disguised in organic food this way too? If so, any MSG free soup, gravy, meat etc. suggestions please? Many thanks.

I'm delighted to confirm that MSG may not be added to organic foods. This ingredient cannot be hidden in different words or phrases, as is the case with non-organic food. It simply cannot be included in organic food by law. So feel free to experiment safely with different organic foods. I particularly like Joubere's fresh organic stocks, but also enjoy Marigold's bouillon powder and Kallo's range of organic stock cubes. Suma do a delicious split pea canned soup, and Mr Bean's make a lovely jar of soup. Goodness, there are so many fine MSG-free organic foods... enjoy!
