Irradiated supermarket organics?
An independent natural health food store in Nuneaton warned us about buying organic food from a supermarket as 'it was possible that although it says organic it could be irradiated to make it last longer' . I doubt this advice - what do you think?

Dear Bryan
Thanks for your question. I am happy to confirm that organic food can never be irradiated by law. I'm sure your local health food store guy genuinely believed that supermarkets do irradiate organic food, but thankfully, he's wrong on this point. Supermarket organic produce does often perish slower than other organic produce, but this is because it's generally picked before it's ripe and is expertly chilled for maximum shelf life. However, although the benefits of longer-lasting produce are obvious, the drawback can be found in the taste and nutritional content of under-ripe produce.
Personally, I buy fresh organic produce from box schemes, farmer's markets or health food shops, and occasionally get supermarket organics for convenience if I run out.
Best wishes
Ysanne
