Hydrogenated fats in organic food?
My partner and I have stopped buying ready made and processed food because we are concerned about how much hydrogenated fats are being used. Can you tell me if manufacturers are allowed to use hydrogenated fats in products labelled 'organic'? We're particularly interested in supermarket in-store bakeries who sell 'organic' breads - which don't have an ingredient list on the label. I've tried to get the info from the shops but they are strangly reluctant to tell me!
Thanks

Dear Jan
All organic food products have to be free of hydrogenated fats by law. So you can buy any brand of organic processed foods in any shop or supermarket and be guaranteed that they do not contain hydrogenated fats. You've probably only received reticence from the supermarket staff you've approached because they personally don't know for sure and are unwilling to make false claims on behalf of their store. But rest assured, you can buy with complete confidence.
