Disgusting organic soup
Just a thought:
I opened a tin of Sainsburys organic winter vegetable soup today, heated it and tasted it, and was astonished to find it tasted pickled. It tasted so bad I thought it was off.
Then I looked at the label on the can, and realised there's 6.4g of salt in a 400g tin of soup.
I know there's a school of thought that says that organic doesn't mean fat-free, low calorie, utterly-good-for-you food, but after making the lifestyle choice to try and eat better quality, non-GM, pesticide-free foods, you'd like to think the producers weren't pickling the produce. Especially not something like soup, where the canning process itself is a preserving process.
So I've emailed Sainsbury's, for better or worse, to see if they'll respond to me (I know a half-tin is a single serving, but still, I refuse to accept that intending to scoff a whole 200 calorie tin of soup by myself is an act of piggery).
I've had a quick look at news archives generally, and it seems the last time anyone covered something like this was the Daily Mail in Nov 2004. (Admittedly I may not have looked hard enough.)
It is time to prod the retailers again?
Bleh, I can still taste that soup, it's like that day I realised the 'frosting' on a margarita glass isn't sugar...

Dear Gemma
I've not tried this brand of soup, but I do agree with you that manufacturers who come up with rubbish processed products made from lovely organic ingredients have missed the point entirely. High salt soup sucks. Most people but organic food simply for the better tasting ingredients. Using these raw ingredients to concoct a disgusting soup makes no sense. I can only suggest you stick to better organic brands. Amy's Kitchen and Suma both make delicious canned soups. Both of these companies have a long history of using organic produce within good-tasting recipes. I admire the fact that you've also contacted Sainsbury's. Let's hope they listen up... do let us know if you hear back from them.
Best wishes
Ysanne
Thank you for your email recommending different brands of soup. I will try them out!
Suffice to say the well of responses from Sainsbury's has dried up, with no satisfactory conclusion. We had a couple of additional echanges, then hey sent me a stock 'we are reducing salt' email, which has some lovely soundbytes about recommended maximum daily intakes and heart disease. I quoted these back to Sainsbury's and presented the argument that their soup doesn't form part of a balanced diet based on the breakdown of its ingredients.
They're ignoring me.
Best
Gemma
