Organic meat and animal welfare
I am trying to find information on how animals are treated in organic farms...I would not mind paying more money for organic meat but I want to be sure that animals are treated with respect... I am wondering if organic guarantees freedom to move and space like for the free range chicken...it is not for my heath I am concerned but the fair treatment of animals.. if I buy organic meats I could be completely certain that animals live a nice life or not? Are any particular organics meat I have look for or I can buy it without any worries from Tesco, my supermarket... Thank you...
Lisa
Thanks for your question, Lisa. Rest assured, all organic meat, poultry and dairy products come from free-range animals. Different certification bodies have higher standards than others, but all organic animal products are free range by law. The highest standards of animal welfare are certified by the Biodynamic Association, and the Soil Association animal welfare standards are also higher than the legal minimum requirements for organic animal welfare. This also effects the quality, texture and flavour of the products.
But the bottom line is, if it's labelled organic, then it's free range.
Best wishes,
Ysanne
