Seeds for Africa
I am heading for Malawi in Africa 31 Dec. I would like to take some seeds for the community gardens we are trying to develop there. I am wondering if you have suggestions as to which seeds might grow well there. My thought is to take seeds for quick- cooking protein sources, such as lentils, adzuki beans, mung beans. Other ideas? Also, I'm trying to find plants for natural mosquito repellent. I understand that the FDA has approved lemon eucalyptus (PMD or p-menthane 3,8-diol) as equivalent to DEET(!) Do you have seed or plant starts for that? Thanks very much for any help you can give me on this.

I'm not familiar with the indigenous plants of Malawi, although I suspect millet plays an important part alongside legumes, leafy greens and onions.
Planting seeds is an important science. Get it right, and your new friends will have lovely crops. Get it seriously wrong, and you could unwittingly be introducing new genes to the country that could interfere with local crops.
I met a man a few month ago called Philip Monk. He regularly takes seeds and friendship to a village in Uganda. He also brings the people there old mobile phones, spectacles, musical instruments, and lots of other very useful things. I am so inspired by both of your approaches to giving. The fact that you're making such a personal job of helping out other people.
You can contact Philip to swap notes at: www.ugive2uganda.com
