Dear Ysanne:
I’ve recently been hearing more and more that the cost of organic food is too high (particularly in today’s poor economy). My response is that if you put 3 pieces of organic fruit beside 3 pieces of non-organic fruit, the organic fruit will deliver much more on taste, flavour and nutrients.
Are you hearing any of the same ‘push back’ on the cost/value relationship of organics?
I’d be very interested in hearing more.
Best regards,
Kris Bovay

Hi Kris,
We’re seeing a lot of change in how people get the organic food they eat and feed their families.
Sales of high-end organic products have been down in some ares, but have risen in others, such as very high-quality organic chocolate. It seems that as the economy makes life tougher, people prefer to find comfort in small luxuries.
For staple organic foods like milk, there’s been no change. Organic milk costs about the same as non-organic milk and is so much better. Many people know this, especially parents buying organic milk for their children, so they’re not skimping there.
Fresh organic produce has seen some fall in sales, but something much more exciting is happening in this area. People are starting to grow their own.
Like President Obama’s new vegetable garden at the White House, families across the USA, Canada and Europe are discovering the joy of home gardening.
Many people around the Western world are learning what people in the developing world have always known – it’s easy to grow your own organic vegetables, even in a window box.
So although sales of organic food have slightly lowered due to the economic hardships we’re experiencing as a society, organic food consumption is still rising.
Best regards,
Ysanne
