Hi,
Im a vegan and i have just begun to introduce organic foods into my diet. One food i love are avocados but my sister thinks i am wasting my time/money buying the organic version as it has a tough skin. Is this true and what other vegetables/fruits does this apply to?
Many thanks,
Laura

Hi Laura,
Organic food isn’t just about avoiding chemicals… it’s also about having food that’s more nutritious, more flavoursome, and grown with respect for the countryside, wildlife and farmers themselves. Avocados are rich in fatty acids, and many agrochemicals are oil based. As such, non-organic avocados can be laced with toxins they’ve absorbed as they’ve grown. Organic avocados haven’t been forced to grow as quickly, so are generally more nutritious and tasty. So if it’s a toss-up between either eating non-organic avocados or not having avos at all, then I’d definitely recommend you eat non-organic avos. But if you’re able to afford them, organic ones are definitely better in terms of your health, your taste buds and the planet.
Best wishes
Ysanne
